HAPPY ENTERPRISE WEEEEEK !!!!!!!!
We kick started the week with our 'Think Outside the Box Challenge' in the Strathclyde Union on Monday night. Having scraped together 25 boxes, plastic bottles, carrier bags and post-its using various means (some questionable), me and Dawn, with the help of our chivalrous boss Tony, transported all of the above to the Union where we were expecting staggering numbers to participate in our Global Entrepreneurship Week event.
We were not disappointed. We had 55 students, in 18 teams of 3 (yes, the math is slightly off) take part in our challenge and a great night was had by all!!
Our very own Strathclyde student entrepreneur, Christina Beveridge, was the first of our guest speakers - telling our eager audience of her successes and mistakes made when starting her own Rubble business, and her most recent Salsa dance classes enterprise. Everyone was so impressed by Christina's drive and ambition.
SIE's very own Amanda spoke to us about how SIE can help young businesses and spoke about New Ideas and New Ventures - as this event was our launch for the SIE competitions. She drummed up lots of interest in SIE and we are confident some of those that participated on Monday will be keen to try their hand in the competitions later in the year.
Strathclyde Enterpreneurial Network's Tony was last to speak about the prize on offer for the winners of the competition - tickets to the Strathclyde Enterprise Awards Dinner to be held the next night in Glasgow's Fruitmarket. But more on that later....
Think Outside the Box was such a success, groups had one hour to add value to all or some of the items they were given and the results were interesting and innovative. The 3 speakers acted as judges but their job was so tough that they put 3 teams into a tie-break. Pitches were made and the winner was voted for by the audience. Our winning team was Asian Attow with their idea to develop a bottle that could contain 2 different drinks (half n half type idea - i will add a list of all the ideas submitted to mySIE later).
We all had a great night and thanks to Amanda for coming along and for all the students for being so enterprising and enthusiastic :) .
In the presence of Shaf Rasul, Sir Tom Hunter, Jim McCall, Radio 1's Dominic Byrne etc., Dawn and I braved the stage in front of hundreds in our 6 inch heels to present Asian Attow with their award and a bottle of champers. It was such a great night and it was a fantastic opportunity to mingle with some of Scotland's finest entrepreneurs!!! Hopefully this will be our first of many black-tie corporate events and now we're used to mixing with Scotland's richest men and women, we may struggle to readjust to life as interns again............................ONLY KIDDING :D
